2013 Past President’s Award
Dr. Miller is a professor in the pathology department at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he serves as director of clinical chemistry and director of pathology information systems. He led AACC through another successful year in 2012. A primary achievement was the development of a new strategic plan for the next three years designed to maintain continuity while adapting strategies and tactics each year. The membership approved the first thorough update of the bylaws since 1948. The association continued to expand its service to the profession with the patient-oriented website, Lab Tests Online, increasing its reach to 17 countries in 14 languages with the addition of sites in Korea and Romania. Users downloaded the Lab Tests Online U.S. mobile app at a rate of 10 times a day as the site provided information to more than 2 million visitors a month. The journal Clinical Chemistry moved into the electronic age with new iPhone and iPad apps; users downloaded 425,000 copies of the journal’s 112 podcasts. The journal also expanded the Clinical Chemistry Trainee Council to offer Spanish and Chinese versions. AACC added two new divisions: the Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Disease Division and the Personalized Medicine Division. And the association co-hosted an international conference on point-of-care testing in addition to collaborating with Latin American laboratory associations to hold three workshops on quality control.
2007 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry
Dr. Miller is professor of pathology, director of clinical chemistry, and director of pathology information systems at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. He has served AACC in several capacities. He is currently a member of the board of editors of Clinical Chemistry and is the AACC liaison to the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 212 for Clinical Laboratory Testing and In Vitro Diagnostic Test Systems. He has chaired the Lipids and Lipoproteins Division and the Standards Committee. He has been on the faculty of the Review Course in Clinical Chemistry since its inception in 1990. Dr. Miller has also been active in several other professional organizations. He is currently treasurer of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and a member of several of its subcommittees. He chaired the CLSI Area Committee for Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology for five years. Dr. Miller also serves as chair of the Laboratory Working Group of the National Institutes of Health/National Kidney Disease Education Program. He is active on committees of the College of American Pathologists, American Diabetes Association, National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program, and IFCC. He has contributed to training 26 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in clinical chemistry and has published 100 papers, book chapters, and monographs in areas of analytical measurement procedures and interlaboratory standardization and harmonization.
