1971 Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry
David Seligson is the 1971 recipient of the AACC Ames Award. The award, consisting of a scroll, bronze medal, and an honorarium of $1000, was presented to Dr. Seligson at the National Meeting in Seattle.
Dr. Seligson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Maryland, the Sc.D. in biochemistry from The Johns Hopkins University, and an M.D. degree from the University of Utah.
Subsequently, he returned to the East and served as Chief of the Hepatic and Metabolic Disease Laboratory at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 1953 he joined the staff at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was Director of the Division of Biochemistry, Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Professor of Clinical Chemistry in Medicine in the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, until 1958. Since then he has been associated with Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale University, where he is Director of Clinical Laboratories and chairman of the Department of Laboratory Medicine, respectively.
A member of the Association since 1951, Dr. Seligson is a Fellow and served as its President in 1961–62. He was editor of Standard Methods of Clinical Chemistry AACC Volumes II, III, and IV, and a member of the Editorial Board of Clinica Chimica Acta. He is an Emeritus member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American Society of Clinical Pathology.
Among other awards, he received the John G. Reinhold Award from the Philadelphia Section in 1966, and in 1970 the Donald D. Van Slyke award from the New York Metropolitan Section AACC.
Presently he is involved in research into the chemical changes that occur in uremia as well as the development of instrumentation and the application of computer techniques in the clinical laboratory.
