2002 Outstanding Contributions in Education
Alan H. B. Wu, PhD, DABCC, FACB, is Director of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology at Hartford Hospital; Professor of Laboratory Medicine, University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington; and Adjunct Associate Professor of Pathobiology and Chemistry at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. He received BS degrees in chemistry and biology at Purdue University and a PhD degree in analytical chemistry at the University of Illinois. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry at Hartford Hospital. Before joining the staff at Hartford Hospital, he was Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston. He is certified by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in Clinical Chemistry and Toxicological Chemistry.
Dr. Wu’s research interest has been in the fields of biochemical markers for cardiovascular disease, toxicology and drugs-of-abuse testing, and point-of-care testing for these markers. His major areas of interest in cardiac markers include creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, myoglobin, troponin, and more recently, B-type natriuretic peptide. His major areas of interest in drugs-of abuse testing include urine screening and confirmation analysis, testing for adulterants, and the analysis of volatile alcohols. He has published more than 250 papers, abstracts, and book chapters in these fields. He is author of Cardiac Markers (Totowa Press) and co-author of Self-Assessment in Clinical Laboratory Science (the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) Press). He has headed the NACB Laboratory Medicine Practice Guideline committees on “Recommendations for the Use of Cardiac Markers in Coronary Artery Diseases” and “Recommendations for the Use of Laboratory Tests to Support the Impaired and Overdosed Patient from the Emergency Department”.
Dr. Wu has served on several editorial boards, including Clinical Chemistry, Annals of Clinical Laboratory Science, and Point of Care; since 1998, he has been co-editor-in-chief for the international journal Clinica Chimica Acta. Dr. Wu is President of the Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry (COMACC) and has served as local section chair for the Texas and Connecticut Valley AACC Sections and Vice President for Examinations for the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. He is also a member of the AACC Standardization subcommittees on creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) and cardiac troponin as well as the IFCC Standardization of Markers of Cardiac Damage Committee.
In 1982, Dr. Wu was the first recipient of a grant from the AACC Endowment Fund for Research, and in 1986, he received the ADLM National Young Investigator award. He received the NACB George Grannis Award for best article in 1991, and the NACB Alvin Dubin Award in 2001. He has received the AACC Outstanding Speaker Award nine times.
Dr. Wu is co-director of the clinical chemistry postdoctoral fellowship program at Hartford Hospital, which is accredited by COMACC. He also teaches pathology residents, medical technology students, and graduate students from the University of Connecticut. He has been a regular lecturer in the AACC Professional Practice in Clinical Chemistry and Contemporary Practice in Clinical Toxicology Review Courses. He as also published numerous computer-assisted educational software programs in laboratory medicine.

1986 Outstanding Scientific Achievements by a Young Investigator
Alan H. B. Wu will receive the 1986 AACC Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievements by a Young Investigator. This award is sponsored by Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics, Inc.
Dr. Wu received bachelor degrees in chemistry and biology from Purdue University, and the Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois. He completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry at Hartford Hospital, where, in 1982, he was the first recipient of the AACC Endowment Fund for Research in Clinical Chemistry. He is certified by the American Board (ABCC) in clinical chemistry and toxicological chemistry, and is currently assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Texas Medical School and director of Clinical Chemistry at Hermann Hospital, Houston, TX. He is also the director of a certified postdoctoral training program in clinical chemistry at the University of Texas, and is currently a commissioner (representative for the AACC) and secretary to the Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry (ComACC). In addition to lecturing to medical students in pathology and pharmacology at the University of Texas, he has been involved with the training of four clinical chemistry fellows, and numerous residents in pathology.
Dr. Wu’s research interests include the examination and characterization of abnormal isoenzymes and sub-forms of creatine kinase, and the examination of coagulation factors in patients with acute myocardial infarction, muscle disease, and cancer, and he is an investigator for the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate. Other interests include applications of high-pressure liquid chromatography for the analysis of urinary catecholamines and metabolites, creatinine (and he is a member of the AACC Creatinine Study Group), creatine kinase, cyclosporine, and the pharmacokinetic investigations of experimental and generic drugs. He maintains a reference laboratory and performs assays to the scientific community on a contractual basis. He has published approximately 15 abstracts and 25 scientific papers, reviews, and other communications.
Dr. Wu has been a member of the AACC since 1976, and serves on the AACC Career Education Committee. He is also active in the Texas Section of the AACC, currently serving on the Membership Committee, is the legislative liaison for the Section, and is the co-chairman for the 1986 Fall Meeting of the Texas Section. In addition, Dr. Wu is a member of the American Chemical Society, North American Chinese Clinical Chemistry Association, and the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, where he received a Young Investigator Travel Award in 1982.
Dr. Wu is a former all-conference collegiate volleyball player who is still active in this sport along with tennis and softball. He is married to a former supervisor in special chemistry and has three children.
