Dr. Jim Hernandez is the past Chair of the Division of Laboratory Medicine and the Medical Director of the Laboratories at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame, a Medical Degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, and a Masters of Science in Preventive Medicine and Administrative Medicine from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, encompassing both MBA and MPH skills. He completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado, in 1985. He has a special interest in leadership, management, lab utilization, quality process improvements, safety and cost-effectiveness.

Dr. Hernandez instituted a leadership and management program for residents and fellows in laboratory medicine and pathology at Mayo Clinic in 2003 to prepare them for their roles as future laboratory medical directors. He was involved in implementing the Science of Healthcare Delivery program in the Mayo Medical School Arizona campus, which opened in 2017.

He is the previous recipient of the AACC Management and Patient Safety Award in 2010.
