The CPOCT Division Awards Committee congratulates Chris Nooney on her selection as 2018 Point-of-Care Coordinator of the Year.
Christiane “Chris” Nooney, MBA/MHA, MT(AMT), POCC(the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC)), is the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) Supervisor at Duke University Hospital (DUH), DukeHealth located in Durham, North Carolina. The DUH POCT Program is large and diverse with approximately 635 instruments (10 different interfaceable devices) and 29 different POCT at 197 locations (65 offsite), spanning five counties in NC. The DUH POCT Program has oversight of POCT at Duke's 900-plus bed hospital, Duke Children’s Hospital and Health Center, Duke Cancer Center, Duke Medical Pavilion, Duke Clinics, Duke Private Diagnostic Clinics, and Duke Home Care & Hospice.
With her team of six POC staff (one Medical Laboratory Scientist Lead, two Medical Laboratory Scientists, one Medical Laboratory Technician, and two Technicians), she manages nearly 10,000 certified operators, with about 1,000 of those performing Moderate Complexity testing. Not only do they manage waived and non-waived testing, but half of their locations are College of American Pathologist (CAP) accredited, while the other is Joint Commission (TJC) accredited.
Chris grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and she received her AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology from the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jackson County Campus. Chris moved to Durham, NC right after graduation and began her career working at Duke Health. She went on to earn her BS in Health Occupations Teacher Education from North Carolina State University. Chris was selected as a member of Duke’s Professional Development Institute’s: First Time Supervisor Program (Class I). She then continued her education, earning her MBA/MHA from Pfeiffer University.
Chris has a long career working in various areas of the clinical laboratory from phlebotomist to her current role as POCT Supervisor for DUH, DukeHealth. She is a member of Duke’s CAP accreditation inspection team. She is an active member of the North Carolina POC Network. At the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego (2017) she presented a Brown Bag session and was a member of the panel for the POC Coordinators forum. Since her brown bag session, Chris wrote a companion article for Clinical Laboratory News and has been asked to speak at numerous POC Group meetings throughout the country. In addition, Chris also served as Member-at-Large for the ADLM Critical and POC Testing Division and was a member of the RALS advisory board from 2013 to 2016.
