2020 Point of Care Coordinator of the Year

The CPOCT Division congratulates JoAnn Crain as the 2020 Point-of-Care Coordinator of the Year!

As the Point of Care Manager, JoAnn Crain oversees and coordinates the POCT for the entire UMass Memorial Healthcare System, including multiple member hospitals and several remote locations. Currently, she manages the POCT under 10 CLIA licenses with over 100 departments in various hospitals and clinics. JoAnn oversees training and competencies of thousands of clinical POCT users and reviews all Quality Control, Quality Assurance records and all necessary testing validations. Furthermore, she ensures the POC department complies and is up to date with all regulatory requirements. Her advocating of interfacing POCT results into EPIC greatly improves patient care safety and reduces risk of sentinel events.

JoAnn is constantly educating herself on the newest and latest of technology to meet the challenge of fast-evolving POCT world. Her institution has greatly benefited from her knowledge on projects such as rapid NAT diagnosis of respiratory viruses and iSTAT recall. She facilitated a safety mechanism for patients to get their routine PT/INR tests at the UMass Anticoagulation Clinic and was recognized by the Vice President of Medicine at her institution. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been serving as the lab manager at her health system's field hospital, which was converted from a stadium and has the capacity of 250 beds for COVID-19 patients. Her tireless efforts in the coordination of point of care testing devices and process, establishing interface and gathering resources, have been recognized as going far and beyond to serve her community's most vulnerable patients during the pandemic.
