1979 Outstanding Contributions through Service to the Profession of Clinical Chemistry
Royden Rand will receive the 14th the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) Award for Outstanding Contributions through Service to Clinical Chemistry as a Profession, sponsored by the Fisher Scientific Co.
Dr. Rand was born in Fulton, NY, on March 21, 1925, and grew up in Albany, NY. He left Albany in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army for two years. After graduating from Cornell University in 1950, he received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Buffalo in 1955. His professional experience includes: Childrens Hospital of Buffalo—1954–1955 (Research Associate); St. Mary’s Hospital of Rochester, NY—1955–1961 (Asst. Director of Labs); Bausch and Lomb, Inc.—1961–1969 (Director of Biomedical Research); Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania—1969–1972 (Asst. Director of Chemistry, Wm. Pepper Lab); Eastman Kodak Co.—1972–present (Supervisor, Clinical Chemistry, Health, Safety, and Human Factors Laboratory). He has published papers on methodology and spectrophotometric standards.
A member of the Association since 1955, he served as chairman and secretary-treasurer of the Upstate New York Section. Activities at the national level include: (1) arrangement of a symposium at the Miami the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) Meetings; (2) symposium committee chairman, 9th International Congress of Clinical Chemistry, Toronto, 1975; (3) member of the Committee on Standards, 1966–1971; (4) Secretary, ADLM, 1972–1974; (5) President, ADLM, 1976; (6) chairman, Committee on Long-Range Planning, 1974–75; (7) currently—Committee on Education; chairman, Congressional Fellow Committee; ADLM-CAP Liaison Committee; member, Board of Directors, NRCC.
