Dr. Caraway served as the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) president in 1965-66 and was honored as 1970 recipient of the award for Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry. He generously supported the Caraway Endowment fund which is used by the History Division to support its activities related to the history of the field.

The following is an excerpt from the award announcement originally published in Clinical Chemistry.
1970 Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry
Wendell T. Caraway is the 1970 recipient of the Ames Award of the Association. The award, consisting of a scroll, bronze medal, and an honorarium of $1000, was presented to Dr. Caraway at the National Meeting in Buffalo last month.
Dr. Caraway was selected by the Awards Committee for his major scientific contributions to clinical chemistry, among them the development of improved methods in clinical chemistry, microtechniques, enzyme assays, sources of errors, and specificity and accuracy in clinical laboratory measurements. It was the latter topic which served as the basis for his Ames Award address at the Buffalo meeting.
A native of Xenia, Ohio, Dr. Caraway received his bachelor’s degree from Wilmington College, his master’s from Miami University, and his Ph.D. in physiological chemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1950. Following graduation, he accepted a post as clinical biochemist for the Institute of Pathology at the Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. Since 1957, he has been clinical biochemist for the McLaren General Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, and the Flint Medical Laboratory in Flint, Mich.
A member of the Association since 1958, Dr. Caraway is a Fellow and served as President in 1965–66. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society, Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Sigma Xi, and the Flint Academy of Medicine. He was chairman of the Fifth International Congress of Clinical Chemistry in 1963, and also served as chairman of the Board of Editors of Clinical Chemistry. Currently, he is a member of Board of Directors of the National Registry in Clinical Chemistry and of the board of editors of Clinica Chimica Acta.
