2021 Award for Outstanding Contributions to Point-of-Care Testing

Ellis Jacobs, PhD
EJ Clinical Consulting
Teaneck Township, NJ

Dr. Jacobs is a distinguished national and international speaker and expert on the subjects of point-of-care testing management, finances, and emerging technologies. He has occupied key leadership roles in the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine’s (formerly AACC) Critical and Point-of-Care Testing Division as well as in other professional organizations including CLSI and IFCC. The CLSI Point-of-Care Testing Expert Panel has published 17 guidelines under Dr. Jacob's leadership.

He notably played a key role at the Connectivity Industry Consortium to develop a standardized interface for point-of-care devices that would allow the electronic transfer of quality control (QC) and patient results to hospital and laboratory information systems. It was this interface standard that has allowed the development of QC and operator lockout features that are now vital for ensuring point-of-care regulatory compliance.

Dr. Jacobs also helped develop the document, Quality Control based on Risk Management, that has allowed medical directors to reduce the frequency of QC in lieu of built-in manufacturer controls that are available on the latest point-of-care testing devices. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services adopted the principles of this document in 2016 and has integrated them into state and private accreditation agency inspection checklists, such as CAP and the Joint Commission.
