2020 Outstanding Contributions to POCT Testing

John Petersen has trained professional clinical laboratory scientists and taught critical and point of care testing at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and practicing level. He has conducted meritorious scientific and educational research, and made contributions to the critical and point of care testing field at multiple professional organizations.

Dr. Petersen met his academic goal of reaching Full Professor six years after he was awarded tenure. He consistently met his Clinical Service goal of helping provide quality laboratory results that supported clinicians in managing the health of patients. Within 2 years of receiving ABCC certification, he was appointed Director of UTMB Point of Care Testing. He was appointed Emeritus Professor of Pathology - a rarely achieved honor at UTMB

Dr. Petersen has been widely recognized for his contributions to clinical chemistry through oversight in the lab, teaching, research, and publishing. He is also known for his advocacy of point of care professionals. He has nominated the two point of care coordinator for awards, both of whom received the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine's (formerly AACC) Point of Care Coordinator of the Year award. In 2014, Dr. Petersen nominated a Point of Care Coordinator for a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Petersen has actively participated in the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) to support point of care programs and educational activities. He has served on the Critical and Point of Care Testing Division’s nomination committee, was chair of the Awards committee, a Member at Large, and also Treasurer. He's been involved in the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (MCC Academy) with the membership committee, as Chair, Secretary, and on the Board of Directors. He worked on several Texas Section conferences, and he presented during the first virtual Critical and Point of Care Testing Division conference.
