Bruker has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its third expanded claim for the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Biotyper-CA system, which is designed for microbial identification. The new claim has expanded the system’s microbial reference library for clinical microbiology by adding 144 new species covering anaerobes, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and yeasts. In total, the library coverage of the MALDI Biotyper-CA now includes 424 microbial species in 333 different groups that are FDA cleared. The expanded library is available in the U.S. on two different versions of the MALDI Biotyper-CA system based on either the standard microflex MALDI-time of flight mass spectrometer or on the high-end microflex smart, which uses Bruker’s proprietary laser and increases sample throughput. This new clearance also includes MALDI Biotyper Biotargets 96 US IVD—disposable targets based on Bruker’s proprietary AnchorChip technology that are designed to provide improved sample concentration.
