Four presentations and a panel discussion will delve into next-generation applications of mass spectrometry at AACC’s Mass Spectrometry and Separation Sciences for Laboratory Medicine (MSSS) conference, which takes place Oct. 1-2 in Chicago.

Advanced MS technologies, such as high-resolution MS with innovative companion separation science, show potential in driving the emerging practice of personalized and precision medicine, Steven Wong, PhD, DABCC (TC), FACB, who chairs the conference organizing committee, told CLN Stat. A former AACC president, Wong is a professor of pathology and co-director of the Clinical and Translational Mass Spectrometry Center at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Next-generation clinical MS promises diagnostics “with faster turn around time, increased sensitivity and specificity, ease of application partially achieved by automation and harmonization, and data portability via cloud computing. These desired developments would further enhance routine lab diagnostics as well as the applications for clinical and translational omic biomarkers including proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, peptidomics, and others,” Wong said.

“Next Generation Mass Spec Analyses for 2020” is the final session of the MSSS conference on Oct. 2. Speakers will first touch upon the following subjects:

  1. Emerging MS applications in anatomic pathology: tissue imaging;
  2. The future of reimbursement for lab-developed mass spec assays;
  3. Linking massive DNA sequencing with mass spec proteomics for advancing cancer research and precision medicine, and
  4. MS-based single cell measurement.

A panel discussion will follow on defining future MS diagnostic technologies.

The five sessions will focus on interrelated areas of advanced mass spec technologies such as high resolution MS, the implementation of MS-based lab developed tests, practical technical protocols and management issues, corporate presentations, transitioning translational to clinical MS diagnostics,” Wong elaborated.

The panel discussion will address innovations that could emerge by 2020, “such as tissue imaging, cancer proteomic analysis, single cell analysis, and the possible realization of next generation clinical mass spec,” Wong added.
