William Winter

William Winter, MD, DABCC, FACB, attended Santa Clara University majoring in chemistry. He received his medical degree from Loyola University of Chicago. Following a pediatric residency (University of Kentucky) and fellowship training in pediatric endocrinology (University of Florida, UF), Dr. Winter joined the pathology department at UF. Dr. Winter holds boards in pediatrics, pediatric endocrinology, chemical pathology (American Board of Pathology) and clinical chemistry (American Board for Clinical Chemistry). He is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the Academy of the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (ADLM). Dr. Winter served as the Medical Director for Clinical Chemistry from 1993 to 2006 for Shands Hospital (now UF Health Shands Hospital). He was the pathology residency program director for a total of 10 years (1992-1996 and 1998-2004). After serving as the course director for general and systemic pathology between 2004 and 2012, Dr. Winter was the founding course director in 2012 for the cardiovascular/respiratory, kidney and the urinary tract, gastroenterology, dermatology, and hematology courses in the redesigned UF medical student curriculum. He also taught in Foundations of Medicine, Fundamentals of Microbiology and Immunology, the Pain Intensive, and Endocrinology. Until retiring in 2023, he was the medical director for POCT and phlebotomy at UF Health Shands Hospital. As well, through 2023, he was the principal investigator for the Core/Central laboratories for 3 NIH-funded grants: Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet study, TEDDY and the RADIANT studies.
