The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted 510(k) clearance to Seventh Sense Biosystems (7SBio) for a blood collection device called TAP that is designed to provide a virtually painless blood draw. After the 1.5-inch-diameter device is placed on the upper arm, a press of a button starts the 2–3 minute blood collection process. Each single-use TAP device uses microneedles smaller than an eyelash to collect up to 100 µL whole blood. FDA’s clearance allows healthcare workers to use TAP to collect capillary blood for hemoglobin A1c testing. 7SBio is working with FDA to expand the use of TAP to include additional tests and at-home blood collection.
