The concept of biological variation is key for understanding when an observed change in a laboratory measurement is relevant to patient management. This short course will discuss how a laboratory can use the calculation and application of biological variation to obtain an appropriate reference change value, an index of individuality and a homeostatic set point for use in the evaluation of clinical chemistry analytes. Examples for cardiac biomarkers will be emphasized. The short course will also describe how biological variation can be used to establish quality control goals.
