Celiac disease, or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is a genetically-linked autoimmune disorder that results in damage to the small intestine when foods containing gluten, such as wheat, rye, and barley, are consumed. This session will review the pathophysiology and epidemiology of Celiac disease, and explore the current and emerging biomarkers used to diagnose and manage disease. The role of gut microbiota in development and possible treatment of Celiac disease will be discussed and an overview of recent findings addressing the role of nutrition will be provided.
