The Labs Expanding Role in Newborn Screening

Every year, more than 4 million babies are born in the U.S. Approximately 1 in every 300 of these newborns has a condition detectable through newborn screening for certain treatable genetic, metabolic, hormonal and functional conditions that are not otherwise apparent at birth. Screening detects conditions in newborns that, if left untreated, can cause disability, developmental delay, illness or even death. If diagnosed early, many of these conditions can be successfully managed, improving outcomes and reducing costs.

Patricia M. Jones, PhD, DABCC, FACB
Dr. Jones is currently Clinical Director of the Chemistry and Metabolic Disease Labs, Children’s Medical Center, and Professor of Pathology, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX. Her PhD is in molecular biology with a minor in biochemistry, received from Texas Woman’s University, Denton, TX in 1986. She did her clinical chemistry training as a fellow at UT Southwestern Medical Center and was board certified in clinical chemistry by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in 1992. She became a fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) in 1997.
Along with her regular duties at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, she is on the faculty of a COMACC accredited Clinical Chemistry Fellowship program and ACGME accredited Pediatric Pathology Fellowship and Genetics Fellowship programs at UT Southwestern. Her duties include instructing pathology residents and various fellows in all aspects of clinical chemistry and specifically in testing for inborn errors of metabolism. She is also a clinical consultant at the Dallas County hospital (Parkland) and the University hospital system. Her research interests lie in the field of inborn errors of metabolism, especially disorders of fatty acid metabolism. She is also the 2015 AACC President-Elect.
