DESCRIPTION

Earn 10 ACCENT® and CME-SAM continuing education credits and a certificate of completion for successfully completing the program before the access end date.

The program is composed of six courses, listed below. Each course can be completed online in approximately 1-2 hours and contains a lecture, slides and transcripts, and a quiz. Some include recommended readings. Communicate questions or comments using the program discussion board.

Certificates of completion are awarded online upon successful completion of the program. Graduates are recognized on a register located on the certificate program web page.

Please note that the completion of an online certificate program should be listed within the education section of a resume or CV. It is not equivalent to completing a board certification process.

SPEAKER PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

This introductory-level program is intended for physicians, clinical laboratory managers and supervisors, and technologists who have an interest in implementing and improving patient safety measures. The program introduces fundamental concepts to consider for patient safety initiatives, practical assessment tools for the management of errors and improving lab processes with patient safety goals in mind.

After completion of the program, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe key terms and concepts to patient safety, focusing within the clinical laboratory
  • Explain principles and strategies that create a just, blame-free culture in the laboratory, and management techniques that can be implemented to lead to more efficient problem-solving
  • Discuss techniques used to identify patient safety hazards in the total testing process
  • Describe the steps of risk management, the characteristics of quality indicators and their role in this process
  • Identify strategies and methods for detecting and responding to laboratory errors
  • Explain the process and specific measures needed to implement quality improvement strategies within your lab
  • Describe human resource issues that can hinder or improve patient safety efforts
