This is a recorded version of the AACC webinar, Role of Clinical Lab Testing in Diagnosis and Management of Thyroid Cancer ,which was originally held December 11, 2012. Two main types of thyroid cells can become cancerous (malignant): follicle cells, which produce and store thyroid hormones, and C cells, which produce calcitonin, a hormone that may be elevated if a tumor is present. Symptoms of thyroid cancer are diffuse, so healthcare staff must work closely to interpret lab tests and clinical symptoms. In this presentation, Dr. Burman discusses measurement of catecholamines and metanephrines, utility of thyroglobulin and thyroid gland precursor protein, calcitonin for diagnosis and monitoring of medullary thyroid carcinoma, and detecting treatment failure.
