Ioannis Papassotiriou, PhD

Dr. Ioannis Papassotiriou, PhD, EuSpLM, is Director of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry of Aghia Sophia Children’s Hospital, Athens, Greece.

Dr. Papassotiriou is a graduate of the Biology Department, School of Sciences, University of Athens, Athens, Greece. He conducted his PhD research  in the hematology field in Athens University’s Medical School. This was followed by research fellowships at ΙNSERM U473 Universite Paris XI, Hopital de Bicetre, Le Kremlin-Bicetre, and at Laboratoire de Biochimie, ΙΝSERM U468, Hopital Henri Mondor, Universite Paris XII, Creteil, France, for studies in the field of Blood Substitutes and Protein Chemistry.

Dr. Papassotiriou’s major interests lie in the evaluation of new biomarkers of renal and cardiac function and diabetes as well as oxidative stress and hemoglobinopathies.

He is a member of various scientific societies, such as the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, the American Society of Hematology and the European Hematology Association. He is also elected President of the Hemoglobinopathies Section of the Hellenic Society of Hematology. He has received three distinguished awards from AACC’s National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (Chicago 2009, Los Angeles 2012 and Chicago 2014).

Dr. Ioannis Papassotiriou serves as scientific reviewer for numerous clinical chemistry, hematology and endocrinology journals. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications as well as invited reviews and book chapters.
