In July 2023, we changed our name from AACC (short for the American Association for Clinical Chemistry) to the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM). The National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) and AACC Academy were also both rebranded to the Academy of Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine. The following page was written prior to this rebranding and contains mentions of the association’s old name, the Academy’s old name, NACB, and/or FACB (one of the old designations for members of the Academy).
Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine
Dr. Moyer fulfills an array of duties at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., including professor of laboratory medicine and pathology, clinical laboratory director, and senior vice president of Mayo Medical Laboratories. After training as a fellow in clinical chemistry at the Mayo Clinic, he joined the medical staff there in 1979, and has since held many leadership positions. He created and directed the drug laboratory, and has devised more than 120 laboratory-developed diagnostic tests. He served as course director for the Mayo Graduate School toxicology course and program director for the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education Clinical Chemistry Program, where he mentored 23 fellows. His academic interest has focused on four areas: protein–ligand binding kinetics, therapeutic drug monitoring, pharmacogenomics, and evaluation of metals as markers of disease. He has published 101 peer-reviewed papers, 123 abstracts, 30 book chapters, and two books. He has been a reviewer for many journals, and served on the editorial boards of Clinical Chemistry and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring. Dr. Moyer has been active in many professional societies. He served as AACC president in 2004, and has served the organization in many other capacities as well, including as chair of the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Laboratory Improvement Program, chair of the Midwest Section, scientific director of the Oak Ridge Conference, chair of the Meetings Management Group, chair of the 2005 Annual Meeting, and member of the Program Coordinating Commission, Commission on Education and Scientific Affairs, and Awards Committee. He also represented the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) to the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry, serving as a member of the Scientific Division and the Congress and Conference Division.
2004 AACC Past-President's Award
Thomas P. Moyer, PhD, DABCC, FACB, is professor of laboratory medicine, director of the toxicology laboratory, and chair of the division of clinical biochemistry and immunology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
He has been active in AACC since the late 1970s.
Among his many leadership positions, he has chaired the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Laboratory Improvement Program, the Midwest Section, the Oak Ridge Conference Scientific Program Committee, and the Meetings Management Group. He has served on the nominating committee and the board of directors.
He is currently a member of the board of editors of Clinical Chemistry, a member of the Program Coordinating Commission, and chair of the 2005 Annual Meeting Organizing Committee.
He has also been active in the IFCC, serving on the Conference and Congress Division and the Scientific Division. Under Dr. Moyer's leadership, the year 2004 was a successful one for AACC in many ways. He pledged to increase awareness of the role of the laboratory in medicine, and did much to deliver on that promise. The website Lab Tests Online was expanded to include a version tailored for the United Kingdom, and negotiations were started to produce it in other languages. The 2004 Beckman Conference produced guidelines for cardiac markers with input from other clinical societies. The 2004 Annual Meeting had a large public affairs program, and a new marketing initiative was begun to broaden the reach of the Association.
1997 Outstanding Contributions through Service to the Profession of Clinical Chemistry
Thomas P. Moyer, PhD, will receive the 32nd annual award, sponsored by Beckman Instruments, Inc. Dr. Moyer is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine at Mayo Medical School and a member of the clinical staff of the Division of Clinical Biochemistry & Immunology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He is Director of the Toxicology Laboratory and a consultant with the Metals Laboratory at that Institution.
A native of Minnesota, Dr. Moyer was raised in Duluth in a family with a strong medical focus. His father, John B. Moyer, MD, was Chairman of the Duluth Clinic for many years. Thomas attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a BS in Chemistry. Following 2 years' service in the US Army, he entered graduate school at North Dakota State University, completing a PhD in Biochemistry in 1976. After graduate school, Dr. Moyer entered the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine as a Fellow in Clinical Chemistry. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 1979, became Director of the Toxicology Laboratory in 1984, and was appointed Chair of the Division of Clinical Biochemistry & Immunology in 1990. Dr. Moyer is Professor of Laboratory Medicine and holds a joint academic appointment in Pharmacology. He is on the faculty of Mayo Medical School and is a Graduate Advisor in Mayo Graduate School. Dr. Moyer is certified by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in Toxicological Chemistry.
Dr. Moyer joined AACC while in graduate school on the advice of his advisor, Dr. Allan Fischer, Dean of Science and Mathematics at North Dakota State University, and became active in the Association in the late 1970s, following encouragement by Drs. Donald Young and Richard Marshall. From 1979 to 1984, he was a member of the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Laboratory Improvement Program and chaired the Committee for 1980–1982. He was a member of the Oak Ridge Conference Committee, 1984–1988, and Chair of that Committee in 1986–1988. He was elected to the Nominating Committee of AACC in 1987 and 1988, and he was elected to the Board of Directors of AACC for 1990–1992. He is currently Chair of the AACC Meetings Management Group.
Dr. Moyer is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the California Association of Toxicologists, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society of North America. He has been a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, and Clinical Chemistry. He received the St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre Lectureship Award in 1988 and the AACC Presidential Citation Award in 1989. He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed manuscripts and edited two books.
In his community, Dr. Moyer has been active in the Rochester Youth Hockey Association, where he coached youth hockey for many years. He was founder and first chair of the Rochester Area Math/Science Partnership created in 1990, a joint venture of leading businesses in Rochester to promote high levels of mathematics and science achievement among high school students. Dr. Moyer is a member of Rotary International, was President of the Rochester Rotary Club in 1995–1996, and is a Paul Harris Fellow.
