In July 2023, we changed our name from AACC (short for the American Association for Clinical Chemistry) to the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM). The National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) and AACC Academy were also both rebranded to the Academy of Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine. The following page was written prior to this rebranding and contains mentions of the association’s old name, the Academy’s old name, NACB, and/or FACB (one of the old designations for members of the Academy).
2011 Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine
Dr. Kahn is a tenured professor and vice chair of clinical services in pathology at the Loyola University Health System in Maywood, Ill. He serves as associate director of clinical laboratories as well as director of core laboratory operations and point-of-care, referred, and toxicology testing. He became a faculty member of the clinical chemistry department at Loyola after completing his postdoctoral training there, becoming certified by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC) in 1982. Dr. Kahn has held a multitude of positions at the local and national levels of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC). He has served as president of AACC and the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB). Currently, he chairs the joint AACC/NACB Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine Committee. He chaired the planning committee for the 2011 Arnold O. Beckman Conference, which focused on glycemic control in the hospital. He has chaired or served on numerous task forces, annual meeting organizing committees, and other groups for a variety of scientific societies, including serving as secretary-treasurer of the ABCC. Dr. Kahn has received AACC’s Award for Outstanding Contributions in Service to the Field of Clinical Chemistry, two AACC presidential citations, and several other professional awards. He is committed to education with more than 100 publications. His current areas of interest are evidence-based laboratory medicine, biomarkers of cardiac and cardiovascular disease, clinical laboratory utilization, point-of-care testing, toxicology, and automation.
2001 AACC Award for Outstanding Contributions through Service to the Profession of Clinical Chemistry
Stephen E. Kahn, PhD, DABCC, FACB, is presently Professor of Pathology, Cell Biology, Neurobiology, and Anatomy; Associate Director, Clinical Laboratories; Section Chief and Director, Chemistry, Toxicology, and Near Patient Testing; and Director, Core Laboratory Operations at Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) in Maywood, IL. Dr. Kahn received a BS degree in Zoology from Michigan State University in 1972 and his PhD in Biological Chemistry from the University of Illinois Medical Center in 1979. At LUMC, he completed postdoctoral training in clinical chemistry and, in 1980, joined the Section of Clinical Chemistry as a faculty member. He became certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC) in 1982.
An AACC member since 1979, Dr. Kahn has held numerous positions within the association at both the national and local levels. Currently, he is Chair of the Troponin I Standardization Committee as well as a member of the Nominating Committee. He is a Past-President of the Association, serving as AACC’s President during AACC’s 50th anniversary in 1998. During his years of service to AACC, he has served as a member-at-large of the Board of Directors as well as the Chair of the 1996 Annual Meeting Organizing Committee (AMOC), House of Delegates, Commission on Education and Scientific Affairs, Laboratory Improvement Program Management Group, Joint AACC/CAP Steering Committee, AMOC Proficiency Testing Task Force, and Meetings Task Force. He has served two terms as a member of the Finance Committee; he has also served as a member on five AACC Task Forces, including the Task Group on Journal Operations, on four AMOCs, and on several other committees. In the Chicago Section of AACC, Dr. Kahn has held many positions, including Section Chair, Program Chair, and for 6 years, Section Delegate. He is currently a member of the Critical Care Testing, Point of Care Testing, and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring/Clinical Toxicology Divisions of AACC.
Dr. Kahn served as a member of the Board of Directors of the ABCC, including a 4-year term as ABCC’s Secretary-Treasurer. He has been active on a local or national level in serving for the Clinical Laboratory Management Association and American Medical Association, as well as the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) and is currently serving a second term as a member of NACB’s Nominating Committee. Dr. Kahn is also currently a member of the Practice Analysis Task Force of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Among the awards that Dr. Kahn has received are the AACC Chicago Section’s Samuel L. Natelson Award for outstanding contributions as a senior investigator as well as the Albert A. Dietz Award for outstanding contributions in service. He is a recipient of AACC's Past-President Award and received presidential citations from AACC Past-Presidents K. Michael Parker and Frank Sedor. Dr. Kahn is also very committed to education and has approximately 100 published articles, chapters, and abstracts. He has given numerous invited presentations on many topics throughout the United States. His current areas of professional interest are protein markers of tissue injury, laboratory utilization, critical care, and near-patient testing.

Currently, he chairs the TnI Subcommittee and the Executive Management Team of Clinical Chemistry and serves as Vice-Chair of the 2000 Annual Meeting Organizing Committee (AMOC). Among his past AACC responsibilities, Dr. Kahn chaired the 1996 AMOC, the House of Delegates, the Commission on Education and Scientific Affairs, the Laboratory Improvement Program Management Group, the Joint AACC/CAP Steering Committee, and the Proficiency Testing Task Force. He is in his third term as a member of the Finance Committee. He also served as the 1986 AMOC Secretary, the 1992 AMOC Symposia Chair, as a member of the Task Force on the Changing Practice Environment, a member of the Strategic Analysis Task Force, and as Chair of the Task Group on CCJ Operations. In the Chicago Section, Dr. Kahn has held many positions, including Section Chair and Program Chair. For 6 years, he also served as the section’s Delegate. In 1987, he was awarded the section’s Albert A. Dietz Award for outstanding contributions in service, and in 1995, he was awarded the section’s Samuel L. Natelson Award for outstanding contributions as a senior investigator. Dr. Kahn is a member of the Critical Care Testing, Point of Care, and TDM/Toxicology Divisions.
Dr. Kahn is very committed to education and has more than 80 publications. He teaches extensively on many subjects, having given numerous lectures throughout the country. His current areas of interest are protein markers of tissue injury, laboratory utilization, toxicology, and critical care testing. Dr. Kahn is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC) and has served as the ABCC’s Secretary-Treasurer. He is also the Chair of the Nominating Committee of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB). Other selected activities include being a fellow of the Association of Clinical Laboratory Scientists, a fellow of NACB, an advisor to the HCFA Medical Review Panel, which developed the ICD-10-PCS system, a former member of the Chicagoland CLMA Board of Directors, an invited reviewer for several journals (including Clinical Chemistry and the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine), and an observer to the NCCLS Electrolyte Subcommittee.
