1969 Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry
Dr. Sydney Udenfriend is the 1969 recipient of the Ames Award, sponsored by the Ames Company of Elkhart, Indiana. A member of the Association since 1959, Dr. Udenfriend was selected by the Awards Committee for his many contributions to the field of clinical biochemistry.
In being named the 1969 Ames Award winner, Dr. Udenfriend added to a long list of honors which have come his way since he began his scientific career in 1940. In 1967, he received the Van Slyke and Gairdner Awards. Prior to that he had been cited with superior service awards by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, in addition to receiving such other prizes as the Hillebrand Award of the Washington Section, ACS, the Arthur S. Flemming award, and the Harvey Society Lectureship.
Dr. Udenfriend received his doctor’s degree from New York University in 1948, and soon thereafter joined the staff of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., where he performed significant research. From 1956 to 1968, he was chief of the laboratory in the National Heart Institute. Thereafter, he became Director of the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, the position which he occupies today.
A list of nearly 270 publications bear Dr. Udenfriend’s name as author. He also holds two patents, and has written two volumes on “Fluorescence Assay in Biology and Medicine” for Academic Press.
Dr. Udenfriend is also a member of Sigma Xi, the ACS, the American Society of Biological Chemists, American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
