1993 Outstanding Contributions in Education
Richard B. Passey will receive the 23rd annual award.
After receiving a B.S. in Medical Technology from Utah State University, Passey was awarded an NIH Fellowship to study for a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Colorado State University. His first academic position, as an assistant professor, was at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX, where he was Assistant Director of the Clinical Laboratory and Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology. Seven years later he moved to the University of Kentucky to become Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry and Coordinator of Resident Training for Clinical Chemistry.
Passey is currently a professor in the Departments of Pathology and Allied Health Sciences and in the Graduate School at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, and serves as Director of the Clinical Chemistry and Core Laboratories of the Oklahoma Medical Center. During his career, Passey has been especially interested in developing tests of high accuracy and precision, such as a creatinine assay used by nephrologists, and in developing performance standards for evaluation of laboratory methods. Passey also has academic responsibilities as the Director of Resident Training in Clinical Chemistry. He has taught clinical chemistry to medical, graduate, and medical technology students and to pathology residents.
Passey has presented papers at more than 80 national workshops and symposia on diverse subjects, including the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA ’88), method evaluation, achieving analytical excellence, and laboratory management. He is Chairman of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, Standards Management Committee, and is a Subcommittee Chairman for the Area Committee for Evaluation Protocols. He is also a member of the Council of the National Reference System for the Clinical Laboratory where he is developing an international sourcebook of Definitive and Reference Methods. As a member of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Task Force on Regulatory Affairs, he has a role in helping others comply with the new CLIA ’88 rules. Passey has given over 25 national workshops and lectures on CLIA and meeting its analytical quality requirements. For 15 years he served AACC as Liaison to the College of American Pathologists Workload Recording and Personnel Management Committee. Passey is the General Chairman for the 1994 AACC annual meeting.
