Dr. Bennett is professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as chief of laboratory medicine and director of clinical chemistry and the Metabolic Disease Laboratory at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He also holds the Evelyn Willing Bromley Endowed Chair in Clinical Laboratories and Pathology. Dr. Bennett’s tenure as president was another successful year for the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) and featured a major focus on advocacy for pediatric laboratory medicine and child health. This advocacy included taking issues related to newborn screening for metabolic diseases and the lack of consistent reference ranges in pediatric laboratory medicine to officials in Washington. Dr. Bennett presented these issues to the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) members at local section meetings. The ADLM hosted a workshop on newborn screening for metabolic diseases in Colombia that led to a clear plan for the country to implement a national newborn screening program. This program could be a model for other developing countries. Dr. Bennett has served the ADLM in many other roles on the national, local, and division levels. For example, he has chaired the Texas Section and the Proteomics and Metabolomics Division. He served as president of the the Academy (when it was the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry) and on the board of directors of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Bennett’s research into inborn errors of energy metabolism and pediatric neurodegenerative diseases has led to 275 peer-reviewed scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters, and two podcasts for Clinical Chemistry. He has organized numerous national and international congresses on these topics. He reviews manuscripts for more than 30 journals and is on the editorial boards of Clinical Chemistry, Annals of Clinical Biochemistry, Journal of Inherited Metabolic Diseases, and Molecular Genetics and Metabolism.
