1958 Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry
The seventh Ernst Bischoff Award was presented at the tenth anniversary meetings of the Association in Iowa City on September 5, 1958. The recipient was Marschelle H. Power, Professor of Physiological Chemistry in the Mayo Foundation, Graduate School, University of Minnesota, and Head of the Division of Biochemistry at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Power was born in Edgar, Nebraska on September 1, 1894 and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1917. He received his Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from that University in 1923. His publications include work on carbohydrate metabolism, renal function, acid-base equilibrium in the blood, metabolic abnormalities in Addison’s disease and in Cushing’s syndrome, and the metabolic effects in man of the administration of adrenocorticotropic hormones and various steroid hormones of the adrenal cortex.
The citation of the Award was “for his outstanding scientific contributions in the field of electrolyte and carbohydrate metabolism and of endocrine disorders; for his tenure of more than three decades of the position of chemist to one of the leading medical institutions; and for his prominent and beneficial activities in the development and regulation of the profession of Clinical Chemistry.” The medal, scroll, and honorarium of $500 was presented by Oliver H. Gaebler, President of the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC).
In the Award address by the recipient, under the title of “Unfinished Business,” Dr. Power discussed some of the work in which he collaborated. He suggested various pathways for future investigations.
The Ernst Bischoff Award is sponsored by the Ames Company of Elkhart, Indiana, and is given annually by the American Association of Clinical Chemists to a scientist for outstanding contributions in clinical chemistry. Procedure for nominations for the Award has been described in Clinical Chemistry 2: 449 (1956). Nominations for the 1959 Award should be received by the National Secretary not later than April 15, 1959. The recipient is selected from these nominations by a committee appointed by the Executive Committee.
