1973 Outstanding Contributions in Education
The 1973 the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) Award for Outstanding Efforts in Education and Training (of clinical chemists), sponsored by Smith Kline & French Laboratories, will be presented to Dr. Joseph Routh.
In this presentation, the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) recognizes Dr. Routh’s efforts during more than 25 years of experience with clinical chemistry training programs.
Dr. Joseph I. Routh was born in Logansport, Indiana. He received his B.S.Ch.E. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan. Dr. Routh joined the faculty of the University of Iowa in 1937 as an Instructor in the Department of Biochemistry; he has been a full Professor of Biochemistry since 1951, and in 1970 was also appointed Professor of Pathology. In addition to his research and teaching duties, he served as the Director of the Clinical Biochemistry Laboratories of Iowa Hospitals from 1952 to 1964, and now serves as Director of the Special Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory of the University Hospitals and as Consultant in Clinical Chemistry at the VA Hospital in Iowa City.
Dr. Routh is currently President of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. He has served as president and vice-president of the American Association of Clinical Chemists, and has served on the Executive, Nominating, Public Relations, and Prizes and Awards Committees of that organization; he also served on the editorial board of Clinical Chemistry from 1954–1960. A fellow of the American Institute of Chemists, Dr. Routh has been a member of the Clinical Chemistry Committees of the National Academy of Science, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society of Biological Chemistry.
Dr. Routh has been training M.S.’s and Ph.D.’s for positions in clinical chemistry since the 1940’s. More recently a postdoctoral program in clinical chemistry has been initiated under his direction, with the cooperation of the Department of Pathology, at Iowa. Dr. Routh’s research efforts have always been oriented toward the clinical application of basic biochemical knowledge. The promotion of his research philosophy has always been an important goal in his relations with students and colleagues.
