1991 International Travel Fellowship

Jerzy W. Naskalski will receive the 13th annual the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) International Fellowship Award, sponsored by Becton Dickinson Vacutainer Systems, Becton Dickinson and Co.

Dr. Naskalski was born in Poland. In 1960, he received an M.S. in chemistry from Jagiellonian University and began his research career as a Research Fellow at the University Medical School’s Central Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry in the Third Department of Internal Medicine in Krakow.

His research interests focused on the biochemistry of normal and leukemic human polymorphonuclear granulocytes. In 1969, Dr. Naskalski was appointed to the Department of Clinical Chemistry at the Institute of Internal Medicine of the University Medical School. As a member of this newly organized department, he established a teaching program in clinical chemistry and clinical pathology for medical students. As a Foreign Research Fellow, Dr. Naskalski spent a year working in the Department of Biochemistry at St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. When he returned to Poland, he resumed teaching clinical biochemistry to medical students and organized postgraduate courses, conferences, and symposia for those doing both laboratory research and routine diagnostics.

In 1979, Dr. Naskalski became the head of the Laboratory of Clinical Enzymology in the Department of Biochemical Diagnostics at the University Medical School. After receiving a D.Sc. in 1986, he became Associate Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and a member of the medical faculty of the Nicolaus CopernicusSchool of Medicine in Krakow. In addition to teaching, Dr. Naskalski co-authored the first Polish textbook on clinical biochemistry and wrote several chapters in the first extensive Polish monograph on clinical biochemistry, “Clinical Biochemistry in Medical Practice.” He has been involved in raising the standards of clinical chemistry in Poland to those of the developed countries.

Since 1982, he has represented the Polish Society of Laboratory Diagnostics in the European Forum of Societies of Clinical Chemistry. He serves as co-editor of the Polish bimonthly journal of laboratory medicine, Diagnostyka Laboratoiyjna, and is editor of PTDL Newsletters, which provides current professional news to Polish laboratory workers. Dr. Naskalski is also involved with the Organizing Committee for the Ninth European Congress of Clinical Chemistry, EUROLAB-92, to be held in Krakow.
