Outstanding Contributions through Service to the Profession of Clinical Chemistry
James C. Boyd, MD
Dr. Boyd is associate professor of pathology, chief of the section of clinical pathology, director of core laboratory automation, medical director of the student health laboratory, and associate director of clinical chemistry and toxicology at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville. Trained as a mathematician and computer scientist before taking up the study of medicine, Dr. Boyd has worked to apply mathematics and computers in laboratory medicine. He holds four patents and has worked extensively in the areas of statistical analysis of clinical laboratory data, clinical laboratory automation, and robotics. He has written more than 135 peer-reviewed articles, 31 book chapters, and four books on varied topics including statistical analysis, scientific writing, evidence-based laboratory medicine, reference intervals, laboratory automation, and computer modeling involving glucose monitoring devices. He has taught medical students, clinical chemistry fellows, and pathology residents about statistics and statistical tools for the analysis of laboratory data. He has also taught these subjects in the AACC review course on professional practice in clinical chemistry. He has given more than 80 invited talks in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Boyd has been involved with the journal, Clinical Chemistry, since 1990, and been deputy editor since 2007. He also served with the International Standards Organization and Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute committees for characterizing method interferences, measurement uncertainty, reference intervals, and decision limits. He has served on the AACC committees for evidence-based medicine and the review courses and on the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry committee on reference intervals and decision limits.
