2002 Outstanding Contributions Through Service to the Profession of Clinical Chemistry
David E. Uddin, PhD, DABCC, is currently Vice-Chair, Medical Education Department and Director of the Clinical Research Center at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. He is responsible for the research conducted at Miami Valley Hospital in the clinical sciences, biomedical sciences, and health services. Dr. Uddin received his undergraduate education at Drake University (Des Moines, IA), received a BS in pharmacy. He is a Registered Pharmacist, licensed in Illinois and Ohio. He continued his education at the University of Illinois Medical Center (Chicago, IL), receiving a PhD in biochemistry. He is certified as a Diplomate, American Board of Clinical Chemistry, and is a Certified Institutional Review Board Professional.
Dr. Uddin has extensive experience in clinical laboratory administration, applied clinical research, and industrial toxicology. While Director of Clinical Chemistry at Bethesda Naval Hospital, he established a therapeutic drug monitoring unit and introduced the Ektachem 2+2 thin-film analyzer in its early operational mode. Recognizing the utility of dry chemical analysis in a shipboard environment, he ultimately succeeded in having that analyzer deployed on operating Navy vessels. While managing the Navy toxicology research facility at Wright-Patterson, he directed programs that established safe operating criteria for handling thermally degraded lubricants and assessed the toxicity of fuel additives selected for their anti-icing characteristics. Studies to describe the toxic effects of coal-shale-derived petroleum fuels were completed during his tenure. In addition, he directed efforts to determine the state of research information available on natural and synthetic fibers that might be potential inhalation hazards.
As a Director of Scientific Activities, Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs), Dr. Uddin managed programs on HIV research, clinical investigation, and regulatory policy. He directed efforts to establish the Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner within the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology to serve as a worldwide system for the Department of Defense. He has published more than 50 papers and abstracts describing biological responses to variables, including exercise and hyperbaria.
Dr. Uddin is active in both civic and professional organizations. Presently, he is the Chair of the Meetings Management Group for AACC. He previously served as Chair, Division Management Group; officer in both the Capital and Ohio Valley Sections; and as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry. He is a Past-Treasurer of AACC, has served as a Member-at-Large of the AACC Board of Directors, and is a Past-Treasurer of the Van Slyke Society. In addition to AACC committee activities, he has served as a member of the National Sickle Cell Disease Advisory Committee, NIG, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Advisory Council. Dr. Uddin is a member of the Miami Valley Optimists International, a service club that serves the youth of the community.
