Dr. Chan is professor of pathology, oncology, radiology, and urology at
the Johns Hopkins University as well as director of the clinical chemistry division and co-director of pathology core laboratories at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In 2000, Dr. Chan founded the Center for Biomarker Discovery and Translation at Johns Hopkins with the goal of using mass spectrometry, protein microarrays, and immunoassays to develop proteomics cancer biomarkers. In collaboration with Vermillion Inc., Dr. Chan discovered a set of five proteomic biomarkers for ovarian cancer that became the basis of the first proteomic in vitro diagnostic multivariate index assay cleared by the Food and Drug Administration. For the past
10 years, Dr. Chan has been the principal investigator of the Biomarker Reference Laboratory for the National Cancer Institute’s Early Detection Research Network. He was instrumental in the development of private-public partnerships that led to the FDA approval of two new prostate cancer tests. Dr. Chan was a founder of the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) Proteomics Division.
He was a pioneer of the global plasma proteome project involving 35 collaborative labs in 13 countries that led to 27 articles in a special issue of the journal Proteomics in August 2005. This was the first comprehensive study of the human plasma proteome and laid a foundation for the development and validation of circulating protein biomarkers in health and disease.
Dr. Chan is editor-in-chief of Clinical Proteomics, was a senior editor of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, and served on the board of editors of Clinical Chemistry. He has written five books, 40 book chapters, and 280 scientific articles. Dr. Chan has received more than 20 awards from scientific organizations.
