2005 Outstanding Clinical Laboratory Contributions to Patient Safety
D. Joe Boone, PhD, is the associate director for science in the division of public health partnerships at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He is currently coordinating efforts to launch an Institute for Quality in Laboratory Medicine to enhance healthcare by improving the quality and safety of health laboratory services.
He has worked extensively to improve patient safety through improved national and international standards, and serves on several International Organization for Standards (ISO) committees developing international standards for medical laboratories. His work with the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (formerly NCCLS) includes chairing the Subcommittee on Guidelines for Studies to Evaluate Patient Outcomes and serving on the Statistical Quality Control Committee and the Quality and Education Committee.
He is a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s steering group on quality assurance in molecular genetic testing. He has also chaired the CDC’s Office of Safety and Health Committee.
Before joining the CDC, he was an assistant professor in the department of pathology at the University of Kentucky Medical Center and chief of the clinical chemistry section at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
