Are you using mass spectrometry correctly? That’s the question that Frederick G. Strathmann, PhD, DABCC, of the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories, will explore during the webinar Intelligent Design of the Mass Spectrometry Universe: The Right Tools for the Right Jobs on September 22 with two live start times: 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. Eastern.
As Strathmann explained to CLN Stat, this session “will explore areas where we could use mass spectrometry smarter.”
One example involves the use of a targeted, rapid liquid chromatography/time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (LC/TOF/MS) drug screen to replace immunoassays. “I show how TOF, as a definitive method competing with an LC-MS/MS, is a mismatch,” he explained. “But an LC-TOF competing against immunoassays is a much fairer fight.”
Strathmann will also highlight different types of mass spectrometry, including not only LC, but also gas chromatography, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) TOF, and he will discuss the most effective use of each.
“The webinar will provide a good introduction into the various types of mass spectrometry, so newbies will learn a few things,” he said. “At the same time, we’ll explore unconventional uses of the technology that should be illuminating for pros. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) will even make an appearance, but not for what everyone might think!”
