Take a walk with knowledgeable speakers on the core lab testing processes for thyroid conditions in an upcoming webinar series sponsored by AACC. The 30-minute webinars will take place on consecutive days, Sept. 29-Oct. 1. “Quick Takes in Lab Medicine: Laboratory Testing for Thyroid Conditions,” will cover subclinical hypothyroidism, thyroglobulin as a tumor marker, and thyroid disease over this 3-day period.
Speakers include: Lindsey Bazydlo, PhD, assistant clinical professor of pathology in the Department of Pathology at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia; Neil Harris, MD, clinical associate professor and director of the core laboratory at the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine; and William Winter, MD, professor of pathology and pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, Florida.
Harris plans to discuss the role of thyroglobulin as a tumor marker in differentiated thyroid cancer. “Thyroglobulin is used to detect recurrence of treated thyroid cancers, but the main take-away for laboratorians is that auto-antibodies to thyroglobulin can interfere with the detection of thyroglobulin,” he told CLN Stat.
These antibodies are common in the general population, even in healthy people. Newer analytical approaches to measuring thyroglobulin, such as high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, seem unaffected by such antibodies, Harris observed.
Following the session on subclinical hypothyroidism, participants should be able to define this condition, recommend how it should be managed, and analyze its effects on lipids, vascular health, cardiac structure and function, and the development of heart disease and mortality.
Likewise, those who attend the final session on thyroid disease in pregnancy should be able to identify normal thyroid changes with gestational age, as well as identify the lab’s role in testing for thyroid disease in pregnancy.
Speakers will give a 20-minute presentation during each webinar, saving some time to answer questions. Can’t make all three? AACC will send out a link each day to webinar series participants so you can catch up on what you missed.
