An AACC four-course online series that provides an overview of diabetes and what labs should consider in testing patients with diabetes and related conditions recently was updated to reflect the latest guidelines and testing methods.
These self-assessment modules on diabetes address:
Each course includes lectures, case studies, readings, and quizzes, and each offers from 3.5 to 4.25 CE and CME/SAM credits. An individual who completes all four modules could earn 15.5 CE or CME/SAM credits. The modules were intended for any physician, clinical provider, or laboratorian with an interest in honing their knowledge of diabetes and diabetes-related testing.
The modules now include updated information on hemoglobin A1c testing (e.g., interferences), the diagnosis of diabetes in pregnancy, and the latest guidelines on screening for diabetes mellitus, William E. Winter, MD, professor of pathology and pediatrics with the University of Florida, who worked on all four of the modules, told CLN Stat.
James H. Nichols, PhD, DABCC, FACB, medical director of clinical chemistry and point-of-care (POCT) testing with Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who worked on the ketoacidosis and POCT modules, said updates also took place with respect to prevalence statistics, quizzes, and method limitations (such as reasoning for limiting use of glucose meters in critically ill patients).
The updates were necessary to meet continuing education credits for doctors and laboratorians.

- monitor long-term glycemic control (e.g., hemoglobin A1c];

- assess non-glycemic risk factors for cardiovascular disease (e.g., lipids).
