The AACC-American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) Healthcare Forum at this year’s AACC Annual Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo will cover a broad swath of topics, including showing laboratorians how the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ efforts to develop and implement electronic health records will impact them. The Forum also will cover expected changes in lab reimbursement, the impact of healthcare reform on laboratories, and the new emphasis on evidence-based medicine and how it will affect healthcare.
Scheduled for July 30 from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., the session’s speakers will include Romana Hasnain-Wynia, MS, PhD, of the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute; Elissa Passiment, EdM, of ASCLS; Pamela Banning, BS, of 3M Health Information Systems; and Charles Root, PhD, of CodeMap LLC.
“I will be describing the far-reaching changes in Medicare payment for lab and pathology tests required by the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA), the impact of bundling lab tests into payment for outpatient procedures, and the long-term trend toward bundling of episodic care and long-term care into single payments,” Root said. “I will present examples of how PAMA may affect the payment for new tests being developed by both labs and the biotech industry and the possible new routes to commercialization that may evolve in the future.”
Of particular note for laboratory professionals, “PAMA represents the biggest change to lab reimbursement since the creation of the Clinical Lab Fee Schedule over 30 years ago,” Root said. “Since Medicare reimbursement tends to determine commercial payment as well, it has the potential to create both winners and losers in the laboratory and IVD sectors.”
