This is a recorded version of an AACC live webinar that was held November 17,
2014. Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Leo Serrano of Broward Health System in Ft.
Lauderdale, Florida, discusses ways to control laboratory test utilization in
this 60-minute, on-demand webinar. In FY2013, Leo's lab cut more than $800,000
in costs by introducing prior approval for expensive esoteric tests, reducing
send-outs, and instituting test formularies and ordering algorithms via its
computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system. During the webinar, Leo
discusses the factors that contributed to the successful implementation of
policies and procedures designed to reduce inappropriate laboratory test
utilization and laboratory-tested strategies labs can employ to reduce costs
associated with unnecessary testing in their institution. He will also provide
real-world examples of quality management methods used successfully by his lab
to reduce costs and to avoid wasting valuable blood products.
