There has recently been an explosion of genetic tests offered directly to consumers. It is important for laboratory professionals to stay well informed about these tests and to access the resources that can empower them to evaluate the merits of these tests. This short course will cover recent and relevant concepts responsible for increased research, commercial development and public interest in Direct-to-Consumer genetic tests for complex diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular, hypertension, osteoporosis, cancer predisposition, age-related macular degeneration. The faculty will review some basic concepts and then cover some of the key issues that are in the forefront of genomic medicine.
