Routine laboratory tasks from the preparation of buffer solutions to the acquisition and utilisation of laboratory data require some understanding of the underlying mathematical principles involved. This book not only presents worked calculation examples but also brings together the relevant mathematics with the relevant physical chemistry and/or physiology of commonly encountered laboratory calculations. Topics covered are: units and their manipulation, acid-base, pH and buffers, spectrophotometry, renal function, osmolality, basic pharmacokinetics, body fluids and electrolytes, enzymology, basic statistics, analysis of means and variance, statistical power, correlation and regression and clinical utility of laboratory tests. The inclusion of questions in the text for readers to attempt before looking at the provided worked answer enables individuals to practice the most frequently encountered calculations. At the end of each chapter there is a set of additional questions, the answers are provided in the Appendix and details of the worked calculation on the ACB website to facilitate individuals to gain further confidence and competency in the use of calculations in laboratory science. Although written to meet the requirements of trainees in clinical biochemistry preparing for the FRCPath examination, it is a resource that will be useful to trainees in other clinical sciences and undergraduates and postgraduates in the life sciences.
