Dr. Larry Broussard is professor and interim head of the department of clinical laboratory sciences at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He has been an active member of the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) for 33 years, and in addition to serving as past president he is currently the representative to the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. His positions with other organizations include serving as president of the National Registry of Certified Chemists for five years. During his tenure as president, he visited 21 of the 22 local sections, and plans to visit the remaining section this year. Despite trying economic times, the Association continued to move forward on a wide variety of fronts in 2008. The successful consumer-oriented website Lab Tests Online added Greek- and Czech-language sites, signed agreements to develop sites in Portuguese and French, and received an award from the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The first review course in molecular pathology, developed in partnership with the Association for Molecular Pathology, was a success. The the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) continued to offer educational programs using electronic technology, and the Critical and Point-of-Care Testing Division introduced a comprehensive, online learning program for certification in this specialty. The flagship journal Clinical Chemistry seamlessly relocated its editorial team and operations to the national office in Washington, while continuing to innovate with new features and a redesign. Finally, the ADLM received a large grant from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation to undertake educational training and development in clinical laboratory medicine in resource-limited countries worldwide.
