2005 Outstanding Contributions to Clinical Chemistry
Edward W. Bermes, Jr., PhD, FACB, is professor emeritus of pathology at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois. During his long career at Loyola University Medical Center, he served in many capacities, including director of clinical chemistry, co-director of the postdoctoral training program in clinical chemistry, director of clinical laboratories, and associate chair of the department of pathology.
Many of Dr. Bermes’ professional activities revolved around education. He served as president of the Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry for 8 years and is currently a member of the board of directors. He served as chair of the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) National Meetings Committee for 6 years and co-chaired two national meetings. He was a member of the board of editors of Clinical Chemistry for 9 years and served on the editorial boards of Annals of Clinical Laboratory Science and Clinical and Applied Hemostasis.
His other contributions to the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) include serving as national secretary, as a member of the board of directors, as chair of the History Section, as chair of the Education Committee, and as chair of the Chicago Section.
He co-founded the Chicago Clinical Chemist and edited it for 9 years. He has published more than 100 articles and book chapters.
His early research covered theoretical and practical work on electrophoresis and expanded to include a wide variety of disciplines, including endocrinology, fetal maturity testing, plasma protein analysis, biological variation, therapeutic drug monitoring, hemostasis and thrombosis, tryptophan metabolism, and laboratory statistics.
1983 Outstanding Contributions in Education
Edward W. Bermes, Jr.,received the ADLM Award for Outstanding Contributions in Education and Training, sponsored by SmithKline Clinical Laboratories. This is the 13th such award.
Dr. Bermes is director of clinical chemistry and clinical laboratories at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, IL, where he is also professor of biochemistry and pathology and acting chairman of the Department of Pathology. He was director of clinical chemistry at two community hospitals before moving to Loyola University Medical Center in 1969.
Dr. Bermes joined the ADLM in 1959, and shortly afterward became actively involved, serving on various national and local committees. For the Chicago Section, he served as secretary, chairman-elect, chairman, and councilor, and was exhibits chairman for ADLM’s 17th national meeting. He was co-founder of the section publication, Chicago Clinical Chemist, and was its editor or co-editor for 10 years until he assumed the position of national ADLM secretary in 1978. Dr. Bermes served as co-organizer and host of the Second Conference on Education in Clinical Chemistry, held in Chicago in 1976. In 1976, he received the Chicago Clinical Chemists Award. In 1980, he received the Diploma of Honor from the Association of Clinical Scientists.
He served as chairman of the ADLM national meeting in 1977 and was a member and chairman of the National Meetings Committee in 1976 and 1977. From 1978–1980, he served as ADLM national secretary.
He is director of an active clinical chemistry postdoctoral training program at Loyola University Medical Center, and teaches in both the medical school and the graduate school. He has been involved in clinical chemical research and has authored many papers and chapters in books. He is a member of various committees at the Medical Center.
