Dr. Ashwood is professor of pathology and vice chair of clinical pathology at the University of Colorado (CU) Anschutz Medical Campus and laboratory director for the CU Hospital in Aurora. Formerly, he was on the faculty of the University of Utah, which he joined in 1985 to accept a position at their newly founded reference laboratory, ARUP. Dr. Ashwood served in a number of roles at ARUP over three decades, including as head of the chemistry division and chief medical officer. From 2009 to 2015, he was ARUP’s president and CEO. In March 2016, he retired to accept his current faculty appointment at CU Anschutz. He has been active at the local and national levels of the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (formerly AACC) since 1981. His most noteworthy contributions to the the Association for Diagnostics & Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) include serving as chair of the Rocky Mountain section, member of the national nominating committee, chair of the Beckman Conference committee, member of the program planning committee, member of the annual meeting organizing committee, and member of the awards committee.

In addition to the ADLM, he has served in leadership roles for the American Board of Pathology, the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, the College of American Pathologists, and the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute. His research has focused on regulation of laboratory developed tests, standardization of clinical chemistry tests, determination of reference values, and laboratory assessment of pregnancy.
