A Comparison of Alternative Risk-Assessment Strategies for Predicting Significant Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia in Term and Near-Term Infants
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all newborns be assessed for the risk of developing significant neonatal hyperbilirubinemia prior to hospital discharge. A new study results suggest that an infant’s risk of developing this problem can be simply and accurately assessed by just two factors – the predischarge bilirubin level and gestational age.
Serum Tumor Markers May Predict Overall and Disease Specific Survival in Patients With Clinically Organ Confined Invasive Bladder Cancer
Researchers are searching for specific tumor markers to better define and stratify cases of bladder cancer, and to identify the malignant tumors that will behave aggressively and may respond to neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy protocols. Researchers now have found that an increase in serum levels of CA 19-9 or CA 25 was associated with reduced overall survival on univariate analysis.
Diagnosis of HIV-1 Infection in Children Younger Than 18 Months in the United States
Appropriate HIV-1 diagnostic testing for infants and children younger than 18 months differs from that for older children because passively transferred maternal HIV-1 antibodies may be present. A technical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Pediatric AIDS describes methods of diagnosis in U.S. children under 18 months of age and reviews issues that must be considered when caring for such children.
