The Strategies Editorial Advisory Board recommends the following recent papers:
Incidence and Predictors of Hyperkalemia in Patients With Heart Failure
Risk of hyperkalemia is increased in symptomatic older, male heart failure patients with renal failure, diabetes, or combined rennin-angiotensin aldosterone system blockade. The drug candesartan is beneficial for these patients, but it’s particularly important to watch their serum potassium and creatinine levels, according to an international research team.
National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
In an evaluation of those factors that influence the TSH reference range, researchers found no ethnic differences when they compared NHANES III subpopulations with the same relative frequency of thyroid antibodies. The research suggests that TSH upper reference limits may be skewed by thyroid peroxidase antibody-negative patients with occult autoimmune thyroid dysfunction.
Soluble CD40 Ligand Predicts Ischemic Stroke and Myocardial Infarction in Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation
Enhanced soluble CD40 ligand predicts ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction in patientsw with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, according to an Italian research team. Their results suggest that enhanced platelet activation may play a role in the clinical progression of these vascular events.
