Vistors to the AACC Clin Lab Expo Wowed by Exhibtors

Walking through the Clin Lab Expo always requires a comfortable pair of shoes and lots of stamina. But this year was exceptionally challenging. With nearly 700 exhibitors, the 2007 Clin Lab Expo in San Diego, Calif., July 17–19, was the largest ever.

With the opportunity to look at hundreds of exhibitors over 3 days, attendees did a significant amount of walking. But this year, every step counted when they joined LifeScan (Milpitas, Calif.) and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in “Walk the Floor, Find a Cure.” For every 100 steps logged by each of the more than 1,200 participants, LifeScan donated $1 to JDRF, which enabled the company to reach its donation goal of $20,000. LifeScan introduced two new products designed for secure transfer of blood glucose data between the point of care and the central laboratory, OneTouch DataLink Wireless and OneTouch DataLink Web.

Sculpture artists transformed piles of sand into a diagnostic masterpiece in Abbott’s (Abbott Park, Ill.) booth. The company previewed three upcoming members of the ARCHITECT family of analyzers and unveiled the ACCELERATOR, a sample storage unit with a capacity of 15,000 tubes.

Siemens Medical Solutions Diagnostics (Tarrytown, N.Y.) made its debut in San Diego with the theme of “Taking Diagnostics to the Next Level.” The newly integrated company showcased a system that merges the ADVIA 1800 Clinical Chemistry Analyzer and the Immulite 2500 Immunoassay System onto a single testing platform by connecting to a Sample Management System (SMS).

In Beckman Coulter’s booth (Brea, Calif.) a trio of violinists serenaded Expo attendees. The company launched the UniCel Dxl600, a full-feature system for mid-volume labs, and the AutoMate 800, an automated sample processor.
