June 2010 Mentor of the Month: James Wesenberg
James C. Wesenberg, PhD, DABCC, FACB, FCACB

Dr. Wesenberg is the Regional Medical Director of Laboratory Services for the David Thompson Health Region located in Alberta, Canada.

Dr. Wesenberg received a B.Sc. (1972) and Honours B.Sc. (1973) in Chemistry and Biology and a M.Sc. (1974) in Biochemistry from Trent University, Ontario, Canada.  He received a Ph.D. (1977) in Clinical Chemistry from the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Internships were completed at community hospitals in Windsor and at Wayne State University teaching hospitals in Detroit, Michigan.  He was Associate Director, Clinical Laboratories at Detroit General Hospital and the Health Care Institute (1977-1980). In 1979, he was appointed Assistant Professor, School of Medicine, Department of Pathology at Wayne State University.  He was also a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Chemistry Department at University of Windsor.

Since 1980, Dr. Wesenberg has been the Clinical Chemist for the David Thompson Health Region based in Red Deer, Alberta.  He became the Regional Medical Director for Laboratory Services in 2008.

After achieving certification by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (1983), he was inducted as a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (1984) and as a Founding Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (1986).

Dr. Wesenberg has been a major participant in the governance of clinical chemistry organizations at the provincial, national and international levels without a break in service since beginning in 1983.  He has served the Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists (CSCC) in many capacities including President (1999-2001).  He has served as Vice Chair of two AACC-CSCC Joint Annual Meetings (1996, 2005) and as Chair of AACC-CSCC Joint Annual Meeting in 2009.  Since 2008, Dr. Wesenberg has been a full member of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) Committee on Congresses and Conferences.  He is currently a member of the International Scientific Committee for the IFCC WorldLab Congress, Berlin, 2011.

Dr. Wesenberg has completed over 50 research studies and/or publications and has presented over 45 research abstracts at national and international congresses.

In 2003, Dr. Wesenberg was honoured as recipient of the CSCC Award for Outstanding Contribution to Clinical Chemistry.  In 2010, he will be honoured as recipient of the Alumni Award of Merit from the University of Windsor.
