October 2009 Mentor of the Month: Roland Valdes Jr.
Roland Valdes Jr., PhD

Dr. Valdes is Professor and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of Louisville. He serves as Senior Vice-Chairman for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and as Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He also serves as Chief of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology at the University Hospital and is the Director of the Postdoctoral Clinical Chemistry Fellowship Program at UofL. Dr. Valdes is nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in advancing the profession of clinical chemistry through his contributions in promoting the discipline of laboratory medicine through the scholarships of clinical service, research, and teaching. Dr. Valdes has been awarded several distinguished scientist awards and has served as president of three professional associations including the NACB, CLAS, and ComACC. He has also served on the board of directors of AACC and chaired numerous national professional committees. Dr. Valdes has authored more than 240 publications. In addition to his other extramurally-funded research laboratories, Dr. Valdes is the principal founder of the Pharmacogenetics Diagnostic Laboratory (PGXL Laboratories), based in Louisville, KY, where his team is currently working on transitioning the science of pharmacogenetics and proteomics into clinical laboratory practice.
