Dr. Karen Nickel
Dr. Nickel is currently the Chief of Laboratory Field Services, California Department of Health Services. She completed an undergraduate degree in Chemistry (Biochemistry) from Oregon State University and a PhD in Biochemistry/ Analytical Chemistry from Kansas State University. Dr. Nickel is a licensed clinical chemist with the California Department of Health Services as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry.
Dr. Nickel’s career began with teaching college biochemistry. She then moved into clinical chemistry, directing an RIA Steroid Endocrinology lab at BioScience in VanNuys, CA. After 22 years of working/directing clinical laboratories, Dr, Nickel took the job as chief of laboratories in California where she is responsible for both state and federal laws for clinical labs and personnel, blood and tissue banks.
