Prof. Dennis Lo is the Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He obtained his bachelor and doctorate degrees from Cambridge and Oxford, respectively, and is a FRCP (London & Edinburgh) and FRCPath (UK).
In 1997, Prof. Lo discovered the presence of the cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma. Since then, he has elucidated many fundamental biological parameters of this phenomenon and has demonstrated the utility of circulating fetal nucleic acids for sex-linked, Mendelian and chromosomal disorders. He has also applied plasma nucleic acid research to the development of novel tools for cancer detection, transplantation monitoring and the prognostication of acute medical emergencies.
Prof. Lo has received a number of international and national awards, including the Distinguished Scientist Award from the U.S. National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry, the Sigi Zeiring Award from the AACC, and the State Natural Science Award from the State Council of China.
