January 2006 Mentor of the Month: Thomas Moyer
Thomas P. Moyer, PhD

Thomas P. Moyer is Vice Chair for Diagnostic Development, Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Dr. Moyer received a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. After serving two years in the US Army Infantry, he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from North Dakota State University in 1976. He then joined the Mayo Clinic as a Special Project Associate, and was appointed a faculty member of the medical staff of Mayo Clinic in 1979. Dr. Moyer is Professor of Laboratory Medicine in the Mayo College of Medicine, and has served as Director of the Drug Laboratory and Chair of the Division of Clinical Biochemistry & Immunology. He was recently appointed Vice Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.

Dr. Moyer became active in AACC early in his professional career, serving as a Member and Chair of the Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Laboratory Improvement Program, Chair of the Midwest Section of AACC, Member and Chair of the Oak Ridge Conference Scientific Program Committee, Member and Chair of the Meetings Management Group, Member of the Program Coordinating Committee, and Member of the Board of Editors of Clinical Chemistry. Dr. Moyer served elected terms on the Nominating Committee, the Board of Directors, and as President of AACC, and he was Chair of the 2005 Annual Meeting Organizing Committee. Dr. Moyer has also been active in the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, serving on the Conference and Congress Division, and on the Scientific Division. Dr. Moyer has authored 114 original scientific papers or textbook chapters and 126 abstracts or reviews. His area of academic interest is therapeutic drug monitoring and pharmacogenomics.
